Tamil movie promotion in Karnataka, planned in Kannada
SouthSide Studio is a Bengaluru film-marketing agency that runs Namma Sandalwood, a network of Kannada-language Instagram film and meme pages. For a Tamil film's Karnataka release, we plan Kannada memes, reels and captions, Karnataka creator and reviewer outreach, and a live post-by-post dashboard, alongside your home-market agency, Karnataka distributor and PRO. Our pages have covered 20 Tamil films in 109 posts with 1.64 crore recorded views, including Jailer 2, whose Karnataka social campaign we run for distributor K. Manju.

Tamil cinema's audience in Karnataka
Tamil is the second most common mother tongue in Bengaluru after Kannada, and Kollywood's biggest releases take a real share of their India gross in Karnataka. The rows below pair Census 2011 language counts with trade-tracker box-office estimates for recent Tamil releases. Box-office amounts are in rupees, as each tracker reported them, and each row names its source and date.

Census figures are from 2011, the latest published mother-tongue count, and Bengaluru has grown since; box-office figures are trade-tracker estimates reported in the press, not audited collections, and trackers often differ.
What our Kannada pages recorded for Tamil films
Our pages have covered 20 Tamil films in 109 posts between October 2020 and October 2026, with 1.64 crore recorded views in total. 1 of these films is a client campaign, marked as such; the rest are our pages' own coverage.

1,08,465median views per post since September 2024 (79 posts)
Showing 10 of 20 films: the largest with a recorded figure of 10,000 or more. Older posts, from before Instagram reported views, read near zero. Every film is in the research data.
Each figure is the film's headline on its dashboard: views or accounts reached, whichever is larger. Views are lifetime Instagram views at the last refresh and keep rising; reach is counted per post, so it can count one account several times. Neither is ticket sales or a unique audience. For comparison, posts about Kannada films since September 2024 have a median of 86,865 views (4,112 posts); our pages mostly cover large or much-awaited Tamil films, so the two are not like for like. Where Karnataka's Tamil audience lives
The 2011 Census counted 13,88,305 Tamil mother-tongue speakers in Bengaluru city (BBMP with its outgrowths), 16.34% of 84,95,492 residents and second only to Kannada speakers (Census C-16, town table). Across Bengaluru Urban district the share is 15.20% (Census C-16, district table). Outside the city, Kolar district is 10.99% Tamil. It includes Kolar Gold Fields, where labourers from North Arcot, in present-day Tamil Nadu, mined gold under British rule; Pa. Ranjith's Thangalaan is based on that history (The News Minute). Chamarajanagar, on the Tamil Nadu border, is 4.58% Tamil.
Kannada speakers still outnumber every other group in each of these places: 42.07% of the city, 51.51% of Kolar and 86.10% of Chamarajanagar. Your home-market agency reaches Tamil speakers in Tamil. Our pages speak to Kannada speakers, in Kannada. For release planning, Bengaluru is the main market, then Kolar and KGF, with Chamarajanagar a smaller border market.
Sell the version that is releasing; add a Kannada layer
Jailer shows where Karnataka's money for a big Tamil film came from. Sacnilk's language-wise tracking puts its Kannada version at about 4.35 crore net across 3,432 shows through day 28 (Sacnilk), while Pinkvilla estimates the film's Karnataka gross in all versions at about 63 crore (Pinkvilla). One is a national net figure and the other a state gross, so read the gap as a direction, not a ratio.
Our Kannada posts therefore point Kannada-speaking viewers to the shows that actually exist, whether that is the Tamil original, a Kannada version or both, and each post names the version. A Kannada caption does not mean a Kannada dub is releasing. Kannada-dubbed releases are allowed: in July 2015 the Competition Commission of India found that Karnataka film and television bodies had acted anti-competitively by blocking dubbed films and serials in Kannada (SCC Online).
A Kannada actor in the cast gives Kannada creative an obvious way in. Shivarajkumar's cameo in Jailer runs about five minutes, and producer-historian G. Dhananjayan credited it, with Mohanlal's, for the film's Karnataka and Kerala records (Film Companion). Shivarajkumar also appeared in Captain Miller (2024), and Upendra in Coolie (2025). With approved clips, we build Kannada memes and reels around those scenes.
Plan around the opening week in Karnataka
In October 2023 Leo took 14.10 crore in Karnataka on day 1, which Sacnilk listed as an all-time record Karnataka opening for a Tamil film (Sacnilk). Jana Nayagan reached 29.67 crore in Karnataka through day 15 in 2026, most of it in week 1; week 2 brought 2.02 crore (Sacnilk). Some Karnataka shows were halted that week during Cauvery protests, so treat the week-2 figure with care. In June 2025 Thug Life's Karnataka distributor said a film earns its money within its first two weeks (The Week). For a Tamil release, the Kannada posts that matter most run in the days before release and over the opening weekend.
Plan first-morning posts around Karnataka show times, not Tamil Nadu's. For Coolie in August 2025, The Hollywood Reporter India reported 6 am first shows in Bengaluru while Tamil Nadu's began at 9 am (THR India). Your distributor confirms the actual times.
Check the Kannada release calendar for the same week. In August 2023 Jailer was set for about 900 Bengaluru screenings on day 1, and the makers of Kousalya Supraja Rama, a Kannada film then running in the city, wrote to the KFCC about losing shows; multiplexes reportedly assured the chamber it would keep the shows where it was doing well (The South First). Run the same check for every big Tamil release; Jailer 2, whose Karnataka social campaign SouthSide runs for distributor K. Manju, was dated for worldwide release on 15 October 2026 (Onmanorama).
Contingency planning for a Karnataka release
Tamil releases in Karnataka have been disrupted several times, often around the Cauvery water dispute. In August 2016 a Tamil film's screening in Mysuru was stopped midway (The News Minute). In 2018 the KFCC decided not to screen Kaala; the Karnataka High Court ordered security for its release but said exhibitors could not be forced to show it (Business Standard). In late July 2026, some theatres in Mandya and Bengaluru halted or cancelled Jana Nayagan shows amid protests over a Cauvery water-release order (The Week).
Remarks about language carry the same risk. After a comment on the origins of Kannada at Thug Life's audio launch in May 2025, the KFCC's president said on 2 June that it would not be screened in Karnataka without an apology (The Week, PTI). In June 2025 the Supreme Court said a CBFC-certified film must be allowed to screen and directed the state to act against anyone forcibly obstructing it (Scroll.in). The Karnataka distributor still did not release it, calling that a poor business decision once its first two weeks had passed (The Week).
For a campaign this means Kannada-respectful copy in every post, talking points agreed with your PRO before any Bengaluru press event, and a schedule we can pause or move with your distributor. This is planning context as of 12 October 2026, not legal advice.
What SouthSide does for the Karnataka leg
Kannada-language creative — memes, reels, carousels and captions — planned around your Karnataka dates and approved by your team.
A page plan across our Kannada film and meme network, plus Kannada creators and reviewers chosen for the film.
Coordination on dates and assets with your Karnataka distributor, PRO and home-market agency.
A live dashboard with every post and its Meta-reported numbers, and a written wrap report.
Send the title, Karnataka date, versions, distributor and approved assets. We plan a Kannada calendar around the trailer, songs and any Kannada cast member's scenes, shortlist Karnataka creators and reviewers, and agree the post list, dates and approvals with your home-market agency, distributor and PRO. Check that week's Kannada releases before locking dates.
2. Release window
Concentrate posts in the days before release and over the opening weekend, the window the trade figures above point to. Time first-morning posts to the Karnataka show times your distributor confirms. Point Kannada-speaking viewers to the versions and shows that actually exist, and keep an agreed plan to pause posts if events in Karnataka call for it.
3. After release
If the film holds its Karnataka shows, run a smaller second-week set of Kannada posts, and another around the OTT date if you want one. Every post stays on a live dashboard with its link, date, format and views or reach, so your team sees what ran and when.
Tamil film promotion in Karnataka: questions
How much does Tamil movie promotion in Karnataka cost?
There is no public rate card. Cost depends on how many posts, pages and creators the plan uses, how long the campaign runs, how much new Kannada creative is needed and whether reviewer outreach is included. Send the brief with a budget range if you have one, and we propose a scope and cost in writing.
When should a Tamil producer brief SouthSide?
As soon as the Karnataka release date and distributor are fixed, ideally before the trailer launch, so Kannada posts can follow each asset. Big Tamil films open strongly in Karnataka, so the days before release and the opening weekend matter most. A short release-week plan is possible; we confirm availability first.
Do you promote the Tamil original or a Kannada version?
Whichever version is releasing in Karnataka, named clearly in every post. Our posts are in Kannada, but a Kannada caption does not mean a Kannada dub exists. We do not dub, subtitle or translate films, and we do not handle distribution, theatre booking or CBFC filing; your production team and Karnataka distributor own those.
Do you have Tamil pages or an office in Chennai?
No. Our network is Kannada-language Instagram pages reaching Kannada-speaking audiences, mainly in Karnataka, and your Tamil-language campaign stays with your home-market agency. Staff meet clients in Bangalore (Bengaluru) only. From Chennai or elsewhere, brief us by WhatsApp, email or phone on +91 63627 23785. Write in Tamil or English; we reply in English or Kannada.
Can a Tamil film be stopped from screening in Karnataka?
Courts have said a certified film must not be blocked by force, and also that theatres cannot be forced to show it. In June 2025 the Supreme Court said a CBFC-certified film must be allowed to screen and directed Karnataka to act against anyone forcibly obstructing Thug Life; the film still did not release in the state. In 2018 the Karnataka High Court ordered security for Kaala but said exhibitors could not be forced to screen it. This is context as of 12 October 2026, not legal advice.
How are results reported?
Every post goes on a live dashboard with its link, date, format and Instagram views or accounts reached. Views keep rising for weeks after a post, and reach added across posts can count the same account more than once. These are social figures, not tickets or box office, and we do not guarantee views or collections.
